Deutsche Messe is taking the wind out of competitors’ sails

Stephan Kühne06-10-2009. While the U.S. Biotechnology Industry Organization is still recovering from the BIO 2009 exhibition hangover in Atlanta, on the other side of the Atlantic, Germany’s Deutsche Messe - in the form of Biotechnica - is challenging the notion that the US is the ideal venue for showcasing international business in this sector – especially when it comes biobusiness in Europe.

This year, and despite the financial downturn, Germany´s Deutsche Messe (DM) has attracted a record 650 exhibitors to attend Europe´s premier biotech industry show in Hannover from October 6 to 8. By mid-June, DM sales of exhibition net space for Biotechnica 2009 were already 10% up on the previous show (8,317 m2), and by the end of August the figure had risen even higher to 11,000m2. In 2008 the show was held in a single exhibition hall, but this year organisers have decided to commission a second facility. While visitor estimates follow a rule of thumb based on previous shows (Biotechnica 2008: 11,285), exhibitor pre-registrations were looking optimistic, organisers told B2Bioworld. Before Biotechnica threw open its doors, overseas exhibitors from 28 countries, representing all five continents, had already taken a 25% share of the total space available. Notable are increases in bookings from France, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. On the downside, no Indian exhibitors have registered, and US firms seem still to be pre-occupied with overcoming home market difficulties, although DM reports continued interest from Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Brazil and even New Zealand.
